Assessing Urban Land Use Changes Using ASSA Model
Authors
Abstract:
Urban watersheds have been a centerpiece among communities over the last few decades. Every growing urban watershed requires a system designed to store rainwater (runoff). Hence, estimating the amount of runoff and runoff generation percentage of different parts in an urban catchment system is substantial. Therefore, this was set as the cornerstone for assessing the hydrological response of different homogenous units of our study area. To this aim, land use maps were prepared for three different years (i.e. 1996, 2006, and 2016) using available archived data, census blocks obtained from National Cartographic Center, and satellite images in ArcGIS platform. Afterwards, the impact of land use changes on the peak discharge was analyzed over these years using ASSA (CivilStorm) software. The results revealed that the peak discharge in 2016 is significantly higher than the years before which stems from the increasing pattern of impermeable surfaces, in such a way that a 26% increase in impermeable surfaces from 1996 to 2016 has consequently increased the discharge by 24%.

Land use and land cover spatiotemporal dynamic pattern and predicting changes using integrated CA-Markov model
Analyzing the process of land use and cover changes during long periods of time and predicting the future changes is highly important and useful for the land use managers. In this study, the land use maps in the Ardabil plain in north-west part of Iran for four periods (1989, 1998, 2009 and 2013) are extracted and analyzed through remote sensing technique, using the land-sat satellite images. T...
full textModeling land use changes using Markov chain model and LCM model
Land use maps are considered as the most important sources of information in natural resource management. The purpose of this research is to review, model, and predict landslide changes in the 30-year period by LCM model in Shiraz. In this research, TM Landsat 4, 5 and OLI Landsat 8 images were used for 1985, 2000 and 2015 respectively, as well as topographic maps and area coverage. Subsequent ...
full textUrban Economics Model for Land-Use Planning
This chapter introduces our newly developed Spatially explicit Urban Land-use Model (SULM) as a tool for resilient urban planning. The SULM can create land-use and social economic scenarios at micro districts level based on an urban economic theory. In order to co-design transformative urban plans with local stake holders, it is important to visualize possible future land-use scenarios. This mo...
full textDetecting Urban Land-Use and Land-Cover Changes in Mississauga Using Landsat TM Images
The City of Mississauga in Ontario has been experiencing a fast urban growth in the past two decades which has caused rapid loss of the valuable farm and open space land. Land-use and land-cover maps of the City were produced from Landsat TM images for 1985 and 1999, spanning a period of 14 years. Dramatic changes in land use and land cover have occurred, with loss of forest, cropland and water...
full textAssessing the Impact of Land Use Changes and Rangeland and Forest Degradation on Flooding Using Watershed Modeling System
Extensive flood damages all over the world necessitate its control and operation. Hydrologic impacts of land use change appear in many ways such as total runoff, and flood peak flow. This study was performed in 2014 and aimed to investigate the impacts of land use changes on the occurrence of floods in the catchment of Boostan dam in Golestan province, Iran. For this purpose, Watershed Modeling...
full textApplication of Remote Sensing in Assessing Land Use Changes in Haraz Watershed
Aims: Land-use change due to human activities is one of the important issues in regional and development planning. The aim of this study was to detect land-use changes using Landsat TM, ETM+, IRS and ASTER satellite imagery. Methodology: In this quasi-experimental study, land-use changes in the Haraz watershed over a 23-year period were evaluated. For this study, images of 1992 TM, ETM + 2002, ...
